SPRINGFIELD -- Some city councilors and area businesses are donating Thanksgiving turkeys Tuesday to local families on a first-come, first-serve basis.
Springfield Councilors Adam Gomez, Marcus Williams, Melvin Edwards, and Councilor-elect Jesse Lederman will join the 350 Grill, Zone Night Club, Adolfo's Restaurant, Metro Care of Springfield, and Laughing Latinos Comedy in the turkey distribution event.
Turkeys will be available for pickup from noon to 3 p.m., in the parking lot of the 350 Grill, at 350 Worthington St.
"We wanted to take the opportunity to give back to the residents of Springfield as we enter this time of Thanksgiving," said Ward 1 City Councilor Adam Gomez, who took the lead in organizing the event, "Many of these businesses have been doing this for years and we wanted to support the effort."
Those in need are asked to bring some proof of being on public assistance, Gomez said.
Turkeys from the event will also be donated to the Springfield Family Welcome Center located at New North Citizens Council, located at 2455 Main St, that has been supporting families who have arrived from Puerto Rico in the aftermath of Hurricane Maria.
"The holiday season is a time for community, family, and bringing people together," said At-Large Councilor-elect Jesse Lederman "Springfield is our family, and we are thankful for the opportunity to support our neighbors who may need some support."
