SPRINGFIELD -- Jesse Lederman just had an unforgettable night on Election Day, winning a seat on the City Council.
Then he proposed to his girlfriend, Emila Ponikiewski, and won a double victory.
Ponikiewski said "yes."
Lederman said the proposal was going to happen, win or lose the election. It occurred at Nathan Bill's Bar & Restaurant in East Forest Park, where he and supporters were gathered to celebrate the results.
"It's the greatest night of my life," Lederman said.
After thanking supporters including Ponikiewski, Lederman dropped to his knee and asked her to marry him.
The two met three years ago and share a home in Forest Park. They have not yet set a wedding date, he said, adding: "We're only engaged two hours."
"I'm greatly humbled by our election and anxious to start this new chapter with the woman I love by my side," Lederman said.
Lederman said he and his supporters waged an intense campaign in the at-large race for council, and Emila was an "integral" part of his campaign and victory.
He and his supporters knocked on thousands of doors and made thousands of phone calls, and spent "a great deal of time talking to residents on what they were looking for and and sharing our ideas."
