SPRINGFIELD, Mass. (WWLP) - Springfield is forming a group focused on resolving environmental issues in the city.

Incoming City Council President Justin Hurst and City Councilor Jesse Lederman announced the creation of a Committee on Sustainability and Environment.

They'll focus on improving air quality, reducing pollution and increasing energy efficiency. Their goal is to help reduce pollution by 80 percent in Springfield by 2050.

Jarelys Nunez, a Springfield resident, told 22News she's happy with the councils goals, "I think it's pretty great, air pollution not only in Springfield but in the world, there's a lot of it going on now especially from the manufacturers and the cars and the old cars, there's a lot."

The committee will be formally adopted at the Council's organizational meeting on Monday, January 7.
