Massachusetts Sierra Club Endorses Jesse Lederman for Mayor of Springfield

The Massachusetts Sierra Club has endorsed City Council President Jesse Lederman in the race for Mayor of Springfield.

“Jesse Lederman has a proven record as an environmental champion both on the Springfield City Council and before taking office. From leading organizing against the construction of a biomass waste incinerator to sponsoring legislation to bring clean and affordable energy to Springfield, Jesse has consistently prioritized proactive environmental policy and environmental justice,” said Carolyn Conley-Das, Massachusetts Sierra Club Political Committee Member “We are confident he will continue to do so as Mayor and encourage Springfield voters to support him on election day.”

The Massachusetts Sierra Club is the state chapter of the largest, oldest, and most influential environmental grassroots organization in the country. With 85,000 members across Massachusetts, the volunteer-driven organization advocates for policies that support a just transition to clean energy, efficient and clean transportation for all, reducing pollution and waste, and fighting back against polluters and threats to the environment.

“I’m thankful to have the support of the Massachusetts Sierra Club and residents across the City of Springfield who believe in protecting and preserving our environment and the air we breath,” said City Council President Jesse Lederman, Candidate for Mayor of Springfield, “Together, we will continue to stand up to polluters, hold public utilities accountable, and move forward policies that undo the generations of pollution our city has been subjected to. As Mayor, I will send a clear message that the days of polluters being rubber stamped in Springfield are over.”

City Council President Jesse Lederman has been the chief advocate for environmental causes in Springfield’s local government since his election to the City Council.

Lederman led the multi-year legal and regulatory battle to halt construction of the proposed biomass waste incinerator in East Springfield, worked with community members to negotiate the repair of 500 gas leaks across Springfield by the gas utility, and introduced legislation creating the City Council’s Standing Committee on Sustainability & Environment.

Lederman was also the architect of the City Council’s 2022 legislation advancing the establishment of Community Choice Energy Aggregation in Springfield, which will allow the city to negotiate electric energy contracts for Springfield residents and businesses that prioritize rate stabilization and renewable energy sourcing.

The Sierra Club is the third major organization to endorse Jesse Lederman in the race for Mayor of Springfield, joining the Massachusetts Nurses Association and the United Food and Commercial Workers Union Local 1459.
